Cesca raised Reynaldâs hand, still clasped in hers. She shouted to the clan heads. âWe both accept! After so much hardship, itâs good to have some reason to celebrate.â
The Roamers whistled and whooped. Green priests and gathered Therons realized what was happening and began to applaud as well. Finally, Idriss and Alexa arrived, confused but excited by all the unexpected colors and revelry.
Reynald said, âThis is delightfulâmy little sister Estarra just went to Earth, where she is set to marry King Peter. And now you have accepted my proposal. What marvelous times we live in!â
She blinked at him with surprise, but did her best to cover her astonishment. The King would marry a Theron daughter? Should they have known this news already? A quick stir rippled through the Roamers. Cesca wondered how political alliances might shift now. Marriage connections between Roamers, Therons, and the Hansa. She would have to think about this much more.
Cesca turned to a lean but sure-looking man who had stepped out of the formal shuttle behind her. He had wavy dark hair and features that resembled hers. âThis is my father, Denn Peroni. My uncles are all aboard the ship.â
Reynald quickly introduced his own parents. Idriss, looking befuddled, stared at all the newcomers. âWould someone please tell me what is going on?â
His wife looked at her husband with twinkling eyes. âJust think about it for a moment, Idriss. Youâll figure it out.â
Cesca and Reynald stood in a reception gallery of the fungus-reef city. Shadowed moonlight and stars penetrated the forest canopy, and the songs of insects accompanied by exotic musical instruments made the night seem magical. Roamers, who were full of their own songs and ballads, took turns sharing their culture and showing off their respective skills.
Through it all, Cesca did a marvelous job of pretending that she was enjoying herself.
The clan ships had brought so many entertainers and exotic gifts from far-off planets and asteroids that the betrothal celebration was like a carnival. Everyone laughed and danced, delighted with their newfound friends.
Reynald seemed intensely proud to be beside her. âI wouldnât be surprised, Cesca, if this evening resulted in several other marriage proposals between our peoples.â
She dutifully held his hand and continued to smile. âThat would certainly strengthen our new alliance.â
As the hour grew late, Reynald took her up to a private balcony, where they could stand and look out at the tree shadows and listen to all the activity around them. âDo you think youâll like Theroc?â He seemed anxious to please her.
âWeâll both have plenty to get used to. Roamers are nomads, and my family are wanderers even among the clans, merchants traveling from system to system. My father lives aboard his ships, going to a hundred different depots and skymines and ekti-storage facilities to exchange fuel with the Big Goose or the Ildirans or evenââshe lowered her voiceââtrading with some colonies directly, though that goes against the strict Hansa trade policy.â
âIâm sure the Hansa would understand, if the colonies have such a need,â Reynald said.
